SAP BO: Optimize the migration!

Automate, Optimize migration;

And minimize regressions!

Many companies wish to decommission SAP BO to move towards more sustainable technologies, more in line with current Cloud platforms.

We created a migration solution between SAP BO and Looker, or Power BI, which relies on a granular analysis of the SAP BO platform, then automatically migrates the intelligence and layout from SAP BO to Power BI or Looker.

Migrate from SAP BO to  Power BI or Looker

However,

  • It is a shame to reproduce in the target platform the complexity accumulated in SAP BO over time;
  • The complexity of the SAP BO platform in source is often so great that there is a strong risk of regression!

We worked on these various objections from our customers, to enrich  {openAudit}  so that these migrations are real successes!

3 steps:

I-  Simplify your   SAP BO platform en masse before migration

The problem

Why migrate tens of thousands of dashboards, when in reality a tiny minority is actually used?

Often more than 90% of the SAP BO platform in source has no or no longer use.

the solution

{openAudit}  makes it possible to significantly reduce the scope of dashboards to be migrated, by allowing massive archives prior to migration.

  1. Obsolete documents, or those containing errors, are detected. {openAudit}  allows them to be archived via the creation of unit BIARs.
  2. {openAudit}  detectsreplicated documents based on various criteria. They can be archived en masse in unit BIARs.

II-  Outsource the complexity of SAP BO dashboards to the target DB

The problem

SAP BO dashboards have accumulated over time more and more variables and expressions, often replicated.

This proliferation can have real repercussions on the target platform (Power BI or Looker), because there are as many refreshes as there are users.

  1. Execution times can be (very) long.
  2. The associated costs are high: reproduction of the same requests N times.
  3. The results of queries from dataviz tools are generally restricted.

The service may end up being degraded for the professions, and discredit the migration.

The solution

  1. {openAudit}  will identify complex expressions/variables within SAP BO dashboards.
  2. {openAudit}  will "move" these complex queries into the tables and into the Azur SQL or GCP views, in simple SQL.
  3. These complex queries will only be played once (then scheduled) for all Power BI or Looker dashboards.

For what

  1. To significantly reduce costs;
  2. To facilitate maintenance by reducing complexity;
  3. To speed up consultations;
  4. To enable sourcing data for a dashboard (end-to-end data lineage);
  5. ....

Example of a typical SAP BO query played for numerous dashboards, vs the same query “moved” into the DWH in view form (in Power BI or Looker source).

  • In SAP BO, this query will “cost” 45 GB, with an execution time of 4 s.

  • In Azur SQL or in GCP, access to the table will “cost” 28 MB for 1s at execution (plus 1s of latency). It is also “unfiltered” access time: in 90% of cases, costs and access times are even lower.

III-  Validate the non-regression between the SAP BO platform and Looker, or Power BI

The problem

The profession legitimately fears regression. The migration should be as seamless as possible.

The solution

  1. {openAudit}  runs the BO dashboards.
  2. {openAudit}  runs Power BI or Looker dashboards after technical migration, with similar prompt values.
  3. {openAudit}  performs mass comparisons with statistical tools.

Regressions presenting analogies are processed at the migration engine level, in order to arrive at an optimized result.

Conclusion

The {openAudit}  migration engine  allows you to automate the transcription from SAP BO to Power BI or Looker (other technologies under study).

The quality of output will remain a major issue.

The ability of  {openAudit}  to optimize the BO platform, then factorize the intelligence, to finally push it towards the target DWH, will allow a considerable increase in intelligibility and performance in the target platform.

The massification of non-regression tests will be a valuable method for arriving very quickly at an optimum, to make this migration a real success for IT and the business!
